about

KATAKOMBA is a mini album by Kyiv’s (now based in Berlin) musician Chaosy. This release has been in store for almost exactly a year. We planned to announce KATAKOMBA on February 24, 2022, a day that also happened to be the first day of russia’s full-scale invasion.

One year later, we finally feel ready to share this project that so much work and thought has gone into. Now it feels like something from a different lifetime, yet, somehow, these 6 tracks boldly fit with our feelings of the present.

Bohdan Temchenko aka Chaosy is a noteworthy representative of Kyiv underground’s young blood. Fully self-taught Bohdan joined his very first metal band at the age of 13. Then he started performing at places such as the sleazy (quintessential) local venue Barvy.

Bohdan’s upbringing in the grainy basements of Kyiv’s punk pubs found reflection in his ideology and his music. He is currently active in two bands: black metal formation Angel, where he plays drums and a post-punk project Lyrica, where he sings and plays guitar.
While devoted to analog sound, in recent years Bohdan has been finding it more and more difficult to get together with his bandmates, so he started experimenting with electronic music on his own. That’s how his solo project Chaosy came to life.

Following his two ambitious self-released albums, Standard Deviation is proud to present KATAKOMBA – a 6 track mini album that comes together as a meditative exercise on the subjects of mysticism and desolation. Choosy’s third album is an expressive and multifaceted work that weaves together a unique strain of black metal-post punk-electronics with a tenor of esotericism.

‘I spend a lot of time observing the world around me, and, for some reason, it’s the darkness of it all that inspires me most’ – says Bohdan. He describes writing music as a natural instinct, almost a need:

‘Working on this album was sort of a trance-like experience. I just followed my intuition and, to be honest, I didn’t really think about the processes. When I was finished, everything just fell into place. It felt like coming back from a dark trip’.

KATAKOMBA offers a broad spectrum of influences that range from Electro and IDM (Joomangy In Da Hurashami) to Electro-infused Punk (Shaolean, BlackBoat, Wrestling of Sleeping Minds, Borderline) and Post-Punk (Solstice). The state of saudade, evoked by the bursts of fragile voice lines and electric guitars is present throughout the entire album and finds final manifestation in the epilogue track ‘Solstice’.

KATAKOMBA is aggressive, yet melancholic. It’s a heady experience into a previously unexplored direction for Standard Deviation, but just a glimpse into what the more gritty side of Kyiv’s underground has to offer.
